Eagles Prove Offense with 16-4 Win over Fairfield
Copeland records hat trick for American women's lacrosse

Rebecca Copeland registered a hat trick for American.

WASHINGTON — Establishing a commanding 13-0 lead after one half, the American University women's lacrosse team handily defeated Fairfield University, 16-4, Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.

The win improves AU to 2-2 on the season as the offensive outpouring tied for seventh all-time in single season games. The Eagles last accomplished this goal on March. 21, 2001 against St. Mary's. Their nine assists ties the women for third overall in a single game in program history.

Leading the way for AU was Rebecca Copeland, who pumped in three goals and added an assist. There were 12 different point-getters for the Eagles as six had multiple goal games.

Tallying two goals for American were Katy Zaweski, Laura Repoli, Nadia Harmsen, Courtney Bennett and Jamie Crean. Also finding the back of the net were Gina Riitano, Nicole McCarthy and Lindsay Cartin. Recording assists were Lynn Brandon, Moriah Linnell and Marisa Richter.

American started off early as Hermsen scored within the first four minutes off a feed from McCarthy. The lead would increase to five within the first 10 minutes as the Stags managed just three shots in the first half.

In net for AU were Kathleen Finnegan and Sara Mackintosh. Finnegan earned the win with a shutout in the first while Mackintosh made six saves while facing 10 Fairfield shots to finish the job.

American will play UMBC on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
