AU Women’s Lacrosse Receives National Recognition
Eagles nationally ranked in six team categories

Sophomore Gina Riitano is nationally ranked in three categories.

WASHINGTON — After jumping out to a 7-3 start in 2003, the American University women’s lacrosse team received national recognition as the first NCAA weekly statistical report was released today. The Eagles are ranked in the top-20 in six of the seven team categories and four AU players are in the individual rankings.

AU is currently second in the country in scoring offense with 13.5 goals per game. The Eagles trail only Virginia in the category. American is also second in the nation in draw controls with 14.7 per contest. The Eagles are 11th in scoring margin (+2.8) and caused turnovers (12.8 per game). AU is also ranked in ground balls (15th - 28.1 per game) and win percentage (17th - .700).

Individually, sophomore midfielder Gina Riitano (Schenectady, N.Y./Albany Academy for Girls) is ranked in three categories. She is 10th in the nation in draw controls (3.4 per game), 17th in caused turnovers (2.2 per game) and 28th in ground balls (3.8 per game). Last weekend, Riitano broke the AU single-season record for draw controls with 34 this year.

Senior attack/midfielder Nadia Harmsen (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Tabor Academy) is also on the national charts in draw controls, ranking 18th with 2.9 per game. Sophomore attack Rebecca Copeland (Webster, N.Y./Webster) is 23rd in the country in goals per game (2.7) and 29th in points per game (3.4). Freshman goalkeeper Kathleen Finnegan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) ranks 27th in the nation in save percentage with a mark of .518 this season.

The Eagles have a Patriot League showdown on Saturday against Villanova on Reeves Field. The match begins at 1 p.m.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
