19 Johns Hopkins Overtakes American, 15-10 Zaweski nets four goals for Eagles April 23, 2003
WASHINGTON — After jumping out to a 4-0 lead on No. 19 Johns Hopkins, the American University women’s lacrosse team was unable to hang on as the Blue Jays defeated the Eagles, 15-10. Katy Zaweski led American with four goals while Nadia Harmsen added three. Laura Barnes had four ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Eagles who drop to 9-6 on the season. AU started quickly as Zaweski made a nice move to come around the goal and score less than three minutes into the match. Harmsen and Zaweski each added free position shots and Laura Repoli scored an unassisted goal as the Eagles led, 4-0, after 10 minutes. Hopkins (8-4) stormed back with three goals in five minutes to close within one. Harmsen netted another goal on a free position shot before two more Blue Jay goals tied the match with 9:49 remaining in the half. Zaweski scored her third goal of the game to put AU back on top, but Meghan Burnett scored one of her four goals with three minutes to play to send the teams to halftime tied at six. Hopkins scored two goals in the first minute of the second half to grab a lead it would not relinquish. Harmsen’s third goal of the game brought AU back within one, but the Blue Jays answered with a goal by Kate Barcomb. Rebecca Copeland scored off a feed from Gina Riitano to make the score 9-8, but the Eagles could get no closer. American was outscored 6-2 over the final 22 minutes of the game as Hopkins pulled away for the 15-10 win. Kathleen Finnegan made 14 saves in goal for the Eagles as the Blue Jays outshot AU, 40-19. Riitano had five ground balls for AU as did Tara Michael who added three draw controls. Johns Hopkins did dominate the draws, 19-8, as well as the ground balls, 44-30. American returns to action on Saturday, April 26 as the Eagles host the Patriot League Tournament. Top-seeded AU will play No. 4 Lehigh at noon on Saturday with the finals Sunday at 1 p.m.
