Eagles Soar Past Hawks, 12-8
Copeland, McCarthy score three goals a piece

April 10, 2004 | Stats

Senior attacker Lindsay Cartin dished out a career-high four assists in a 12-8 win over Monmouth Saturday.

WASHINGTON — American University women’s lacrosse players Rebecca Copeland (Webster, N.Y./Webster) and Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) scored three goals a piece and attacker Lindsay Cartin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) dished out four assists as the Eagles outlasted visiting Monmouth University, 12-8, Saturday at Reeves Field.

Leading 6-4 at halftime, AU looked to take control of the contest when it scored four consecutive goals in the first five minutes of the second period to give the Eagles a commanding 10-4 lead. Copeland tallied her third goal, and 34th goal of the season, off a feed from Cartin at 25:23 of the second to cap the rally. All three of Copeland’s scores came off assists from Cartin, as the duo worked a two-person game from behind the net to the crease area.

However, Monmouth switched goaltenders, to Jessica Chapman, after the Eagles took a 10-4 lead, and the Hawks’ offense settled itself and scored four of the game’s next five goals to pull with three, 11-8, with over eight minutes remaining. The Hawks’ leading scorer, Stacy Sydlo, notched three goals during that run, part of her game-high five goals.

Still, AU took a time-out to regroup, and the strategy worked. AU’s offense held the ball for long stretches and Eagle goaltender Kathleen Finnegan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s) came up huge over the final eight minutes, with six of her 12 saves, to preserve American’s lead. A late goal by senior Tara Michael (Owings, Md./South River), one of her two on the day, helped ice away the victory.

For the Eagles, senior co-captain Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean) had an all-around game with two goals, five ground balls and three draw controls. Senior co-captain Lynn Brandon (Exton, Pa./Henderson) also contributed three caused turnovers and one assist.

AU improves to 6-6 on the season, while Monmouth falls to 6-5.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, April 13, when they travel to Philadelphia to square off against La Salle in a game that was rescheduled due to inclement weather on March 17. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
