Hyman Takes Home Only First-Round Victory For Eagles At EIWA's
Pelligrino moves on to second round of consolations

Jared Hyman took home the Eagles only first-round victory during the first day of the EIWA championships at the University of Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Senior Jared Hyman (Norcross, Ga./Norcross) took home the Eagles only first-round victory for American at the first day of the 100th Annual Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Association Championships, Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania.

Hyman entered the first round seated eighth in the 285-pound weight class and garnered his sixth straight victory with a 9-3 decision over Columbia’s Bart Seeman. Leading through the entire match, Hyman next moved on to the championship consolations, where he faced the No. 1 seed and returning EIWA champion, Matt Feast.

Against Feast, Hyman stayed strong throughout the first round and kept the score close, ending the first period at 2-1. In the second, Hyman grabbed an escape, only to have Feast take him down for two. With less than a minute remaining Feast closed the match as he put Hyman on the mat for a pin at 4:26.

Moving on to the wrestle-backs, Hyman faced Lee Beane of Brown, who fell to the No. 2 seed in the opening rounds. Against Beane, it remained scoreless through the first round, until Hyman snagged a point off an escape. Beane came back in the third with an escape of his own, followed by a take down, Hyman was pinned with seven seconds remaining to finish the match.

Also for the Eagles in the first round, senior Matt Pelligrino (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) fell to No. 2 Mario Stuart, 21-5 (6:34), and moved on to the wrestle-backs, where he faced Franklin and Marshall’s Trent Dixon. Against Dixon, Pelligrino led throughout the entire match and posted a 16-5 decision. In the second round of the consolations, Pelligrino took on No. 8 Mark Koszyk, where he was eliminated with a 7-0 decision.

Freshman Dwayne Hash-Barberis (Rome, N.Y./Scotia Glenville) fell to the No. 1 seed in 165 in the first round and received a bye in the first round of the consolations. In the second round, Hash-Barberis came from behind in the third period and with a reversal and brought result down to riding time. In the end, Hash-Barberis fell in a 7-6 decision.

In other action for the Eagles, junior Daniel Waters (Laurel, Del./Penn State) fell to Chris Pogue of Navy due to an injury to his right knee which took him out of the competition and ended his season. Sophomore Eric Levine (Newton, Mass./Newton South) made it to the second round of the wrestle-backs in 133 with a bye in the first round, but fell to Dare Ajibade of Rutgers with fall at 1:05.

Fellow sophomore Tom Kniezewski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) took on Erik Norgaard in the first round of 149, but fell by a one-point margin, due to riding time. In the consolations, he fell in the first round, in another close bout of 9-7, to Rob Hitschler of Penn, while in the 141-pound division Daniel Lobsenz (Fairfield, Conn./Choate) fell to Ryan Bridge, 8-4, and Joe Peretta, 3-2.

The Eagles will not return any players to the second day of competition and will finish their season with a 1-12 record overall.
