Women’s Soccer Places 14 on PL Academic Honor Roll WASHINGTON - American University’s women’s soccer team placed 14 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as announced by the league office. Senior Sara Jagare (Uppsala, Sweden/Ekebysleolan) led her team with a 3.94 grade and made the team for a second straight season. She was also a Second Team 2002 Patriot League Women's Soccer All-League Team selection. To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.2 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the seven League-sponsored fall championship sports. A total of 510 student-athletes, including 101 women’s soccer players, were named to the League’s Fall Academic Honor Roll, including 20 with 4.00 GPAs. The Fall Academic Honor Roll includes the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Jagare was not the only Eagle to earn a second straight appearance on the Academic Team. Sophomore Erica Peters (Champaign, Ill./Champaign Central) made it in 2001 with a 3.74 GPA, and this year she posted a 3.94. Fellow sophomore Maha Elnabawi (Herndon, Va./Oakton) earned a 3.25 for the fall semester. American went 10-9-2 in 2002, and made their first appearance in the NCAA's. The Eagles lost to Maryland by a goal in a heartbreaker, 1-0. They earned a spot in the tournament by defeating Colgate in the championship match of the Patriot League Championship Game 2-1.
American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year to date on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men's cross country, women's cross country, men’s soccer, women's soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
