Men Roll to Maryland Invitational Title October 19, 2002 | Results
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - American University's men's cross country squad easily won its second consecutive Maryland Invitational title, scoring only 22 points in the meet. The host Terrapins were second with 50 points. Junior Frank Malpigli was the first collegiate finisher for the second year in a row, running 25:09 to finish fourth overall. Malpigli ran with the open runners for most of the race and his time was almost a minute faster than his mark last season. Junior Matt Seymour was the second Eagle to cross the line, coming in third in the college race (sixth overall) in 25:22. The next three AU runners were tightly packed for most of the race. Sophomore Patrick MacAdie was the next AU runner to finish, placing fifth in 25:49. He was followed by junior Matt Cooke in sixth (25:51) and sophomore Sean Duffy in seventh (25:52). Completing the top-seven for AU was Will Knox in 10th (26:25). Phil Gaeta was the seventh Eagle in his first collegiate race, placing 18th in 26:58. The Eagles also took 19th and 20th places in the race with Carlos Hunt running 27:01 and Chad Young coming in in 27:06. Matt Barresi and Pat Burford finished 23rd and 24th with both runners crossing the line in 27:30. Chris Repka was 27th, running 27:42 and Phil Turner was 33rd in 28:16. AU's 22 points defeated Maryland who had 50. Johns Hopkins was third (98) followed by George Washington (107), Coppin State (126), George Mason (144) and Morgan State (199). AU's next race is the Patriot League championships held in West Point, N.Y. on November 2nd.
