Men Place Seventh in NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region
November 16, 2002 | Meet Results DAVIS, W. VA. — The American University men’s cross country team placed seventh at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional today held in Davis, West Virginia. In an extremely tight meet, the Eagles were only two points out of fifth place. Junior Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was the first Eagle to cross the line, placing 26th in 31:35.8 for the 10,000-meter course. Also running for the Patriot League Cross Country team champions was senior Sean O’Brien (Tewksbury, Mass./Winnisquam Regional) who placed 37th in 31:50.5 and was closely followed by junior Matt Cooke (Washington, D.C./Maret) in 38th (31:51.5). Sophomore Patrick MacAdie (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) was the fourth AU finisher in 43rd (31:54.7) and classmate Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) closed out the top-five in 53rd place, running 32:14.5. Also competing for the Eagles was junior Frank Malpigli (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) who placed 64th in 32:28.8 and freshman Phil Gaeta (Herndon, Va./Oakton) who finished 79th in 32:44.4. The meet concluded the 2002 cross country season which was one of the most successful seasons in school history for the men’s cross country squad. The team captured its first Patriot League title two weeks ago and improved upon its 10th place finish at the regional meet last year. The squad also won its second consecutive Maryland Invitational title. American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, is in its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
