American Men's Cross Country Places Second at Navy Invitational
Maurer and Malpigli lead the way for the Eagles

ANNAPOLIS, Md.
-- In its first race of the 2002 season, the AU men's cross country team placed second in the Navy Invitational. The Eagles scored 70 points to finish behind the host Midshipmen. Danny Maurer placed eighth in his first race in an American uniform with teammate Frank Malpigli close behind in ninth.

Maurer, a transfer from Furman, ran 25:18.77 over the 8,000-meter course to pace the Eagles. Malpigli's time of 25:20.92 was nearly a full minute then his time of a year ago on the same course. Matt Seymour placed 12th in the meet, running 25:32.78.

Sean O'Brien and Will Knox finished 20th and 21st respectively in the race. O'Brien ran 25:50.01 while Knox was just over a second behind in 25:51.73. Carlos Hunt was the seventh Eagle to cross the line, running 27:21.19 to finish 29th.

American returns to action next weekend at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational held in Emmitsburg, Md.
