Men Capture Third Consecutive Maryland Invitational Title
October 11, 2003 - Men's Stats COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The American University men’s cross country team raced to their third consecutive Maryland Invitational team title this morning. The men were led by senior captain Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder), who used the near perfect conditions to race to a time of 24:19, over a minute faster than his time from last year. Early on, Seymour maintained pace with Syracuse runner John Bitok only to pull away three and a half miles into the race. He crossed the line nearly 25 seconds in front of his nearest competitor. Running together throughout most of the event, juniors Pat MacAdie (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) and Sean Duffy (Holmes, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) finished fourth and fifth overall in 24:55 and 25:02 respectively. Fellow junior Danny Maurer (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs/Furman) ran 25:22 for 9th place with sophomore Pat Burford (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) close behind in 12th place at 25:30. Burford ran exactly two minutes faster than he did at last year’s race. The perfect conditions resulted in other personal bests. Freshman Conor Lanz (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) and sophomores Will Knox (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) and Phil Turner (Reedsburg, Wisc./Reedsburg Area), ran 26:01, 26:06, and 26:23 respectively. Turner’s time was a minute and 40 seconds faster than his performance last year. Freshman Rob Hofmann (Wantagh, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) showed solid form racing to a 27th place 26:26. Jon Riley (35th, 26:58) was the next Eagle to cross the line with Frank Malpigli (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) behind in 40th at 27:10. Chris Repka (East Windsor, Hightstown) was 46th, at 27:19 while Matt Barresi (Laurel, Md./Atholton) finished 60th (28:29) to round out the Eagle squad. The Eagles now go back to training in preparation for the Patriot League Championships at Lafayette College on Nov. 1.
