MANASSAS, Va. – The American Univeristy men’s and women’s cross country teams ran well against stiff competition at the George Washington Invitational. Running through the muck and mud at Bull Run Regional Park, the men’s and women’s cross country teams placed third and second respectively.

The men’s team was led by the trio of Danny Maurer, Sean Duffy, and Will Knox. Maurer, a junior, paced the men through the 8-kilometer course with a tenth place finish in 26:31.9. Moments later, Duffy crossed the line thirteenth (26:37.4) followed closely by Knox in fifteenth (26:39.4). Sophomore Pat Burford (21st, 26:56.9) and freshman Conor Lanz (36th, 27:25.4) rounded out the scoring for AU. Sophomore Phil Turner placed 40th (27:35.9) and Matt Barresi was 48th (28:07.4) closing out AU’s top seven. In addition, Chris Repka ran 28:37.2 for 57th, senior Frank Malpigli ran 29:14 for 73rd, and freshman Jon Riley ran 29:41.1 for 87th overall.

The team finished third behind nationally-ranked William and Mary, who won the meet with 27 points. Georgetown finished a close second with 29 points.
The women’s team rode sophomore Keira Carlstrom, senior Jen Baclawski, and freshman Kelley Taylor’s 1-2-3 finish to a second-place team finish. The top three women were each separated by 15 seconds as Carlstrom traversed the 5k course in 18:35.2, followed by Baclawaski’s second-place 18:50. Taylor finished a close third in 19:05.8.

A combination of Georgetown and George Washington runners broke up the AU pack but sophomore Zaia Wharton and junior Whitney McNees finished out the team scoring, placing 20th and 22nd respectively. Leah Heinecke-Krumhus was the last Eagle to cross the line in 20:19.2 for 26th place.

The women scored 40 points, and were just edged by Georgetown, which tallied 34 points.

AU’s next race is the Maryland Invitational at College Park on October 11th.
