ATV is American University's student-run television station. Broadcast to on-campus televisions on channels 2 and 15, as well as online at auatv.com and at AmericanUTelevision on YouTube, ATV airs original programming 24 hours a day. Featured shows have ranged from late-night talk shows to sitcoms and sports breakdowns. ATV's flagship program is its weekly campus news broadcast.
ATV was first established in 1979, under the name WAVE-TV. In the Spring of 1981, it was fully recognized by the AU Student Confederation and was authorized to broadcast its programming to the community. ATV has moved three times in its era at American University, but, since 2002, has been located on the second floor of the Mary Graydon Center.
The majority of the students who work at ATV are majors in either Broadcast Journalism or film, but SPA and SIS majors have also contributed their time as political pundits or world news analysts.
ATV has had several notable alumni in its ranks over the years, including "Meet the Press" host David Gregory. Recent students have also gone on to jobs and internships at CNN and FOX News.
