Committed to serving faculty members' and students' teaching, learning and advanced technology needs, the Center for Teaching Research and Learning (CTRL) provides a number of services for faculty at American University.

The Teaching and Learning Resources Group works with faculty, expanding their use of digital media in classroom pedagogy and to enhance their overall success in the classroom. This Group also organizes the annual campus-wide Ann Ferren Conference,  the three-year Greenberg Seminars Program (which trains doctoral students to become members of the professoriate), and coordinates the yearlong AU Entrée Program (for orientating new faculty members to American University).

The Research Support Group assists faculty and doctoral students in research involving quantitative or qualitative data. This Group maintains the CTRL Lab in Hurst 202 and 203, and teaches a variety of regular tutorials on various types of quantitative and qualitative analysis software. Other activities include participating in a high-performance computing initiative and creating a virtual computing laboratory.

The Online Learning Group offers technological and pedagogical consulting and training to faculty interested a variety of remote contexts.  These skills can be applied to emergency planning for class continuity, hybrid classes, and completely online situations. These learning models can be used for traditional courses that supplement face to face instruction with online tools. We offer training on emerging tools (i.e. social media) in order to effectively engage students in face-to-face classes. For information about training opportunities or consultations, please contact James Lee (jlee@american.edu) or Paul Prokop (prokop@american.edu).

The Main Office of CTRL is located in Hurst Hall Room 214; the Director’s Office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5 PM. For more information on the Center for Teaching, Research & Learning, call (202) 885-2117 or visit http://american.edu/ctrl/
