International Applications

As an international applicant, you are required to submit the following information:


1. Application and personal essay


2. Official academic records from each secondary school, college or university you have attended


3. Two letters of recommendation


4. SAT/ACT*


5. Demonstrate English Proficiency - TOEFL/IELTS score**


6. Financial statement


*If your secondary/high school education was outside the United States (US), you are not required to submit an SAT/ACT score.  However, if you are graduating or graduated from a secondary school in the US or completing an American or International Baccaluareate (IB) curriculum are required to submit an SAT or ACT score.


**The TOEFL can be waived if your SAT critical reading score is 530 or higher.  All applicants whose first language is not English, regardless of citizenship, must submit a TOEFL score of 550 or higher on the paper-based test or 213 or higher on the computer-based test or 80 or higher on the internet-based test unless they have completed at least two academic English writing courses from a regionally accredited U.S. university with a grade of "C" or better.  Applicants may also submit a score of 530 or higher from the SAT I: Critical Reading test or a score of 6.5 or higher on the IELTS in place of the TOEFL.  International transfer applicants who have completed two academic English-writing courses with a grade of C or better at an accredited U.S. college or university or with a B or better from an AP-rated, regionally accredited U.S. college are exempt from submitting scores from these examinations.


You may apply online.  Go to the Admissions Web site at  http://admissions.american.edu and select Prospective Student Portal/Apply On-line: Undergraduate Students.  The instructions will show you how to create a portal, receive your password from AU, and then log back in to begin the online application.  Read the on-line application instructions for international students first. We also accept the paper and on-line version of the Common Application.  For an online or print application, you must include the U.S. $60 application fee.  Application deadlines for international transfer students (those who have taken some university courses but have not completed university studies) are: - Fall term (starting in late August): May 1 - Spring term (which starts in January): September 1  You can visit our International Student Services Web site at: http://www.american.edu/ocl/iss/.
