Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services provides an organized campus conduct system founded on the principles of equity, fairness, and due process for the resolution of grievances in the American University community. In addition, this office promotes the learning and use of alternative dispute resolution methods to resolve disputes in our community. Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services consists of two separate and distinct programs. The first, Student Conduct, provides administrative and organizational support for the judicial process. The Conduct Council is the university’s peer review board, consisting of students, staff, and faculty, which hears non-academic disciplinary cases which may result in loss of university housing privileges, suspension, or dismissal from the university. Non-academic disciplinary cases which are likely to result in less severe sanctions are adjudicated in disciplinary conferences with a Student Conduct hearing officer. The second program, Conflict Resolution Services, provides an alternate forum for the resolution of conflict. Student Conduct maintains a roster of mediators and conflict coaches. All mediators are current members of the AU community, including students, staff, and faculty. Student Conduct cases may be self-referred or may be referred by any other university office or program. Pending disciplinary action cases may, at the discretion of the director of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services, be referred to mediation for resolution. If disputing parties in these cases are not able to reach and abide by an agreement through the alternative dispute resolution process, then the complaint will be pursued through the judicial process.
