Cost

For students, it can be much more cost effective to use metro rail or busses instead of keeping a car on campus due to saving from not paying for a parking pass, gas and maintenance. Metro trips vary in cost depending on how far one travels and at what time of day. Fares typically range between $1.35 and $4.50 per trip on the train, or $1.25 to $3 on the bus. Students who use metro frequently may find it convenient to purchase a SmartTrip card which can be reloaded at the fare machines and provide faster processing at the gates, rather than buy a paper farecard for every trip.

Safety

Metro is a safe system. Nearly 800,000 people ride the train and 450,000 ride the buses every day. In the event of an emergency, metro staff are ready to help and can be easily found wearing their uniforms.  Metro is also well-known for providing a safe way to commute to and from campus during snow storms when driving can become dangerous.

Trip Planning

Before going on a trip, Metro offers a free trip planning service on their website, http://wmata.com/. One may simply enter the starting and ending points of the trip, and the time to arrive or depart, and the website will search the train and bus schedules to produce various possible routes along with the cost and length of time for each.
