  • For all currently enrolled American University students, staff, and faculty:

The  New Media Center, located on the second floor of Hurst Hall, has an  inventory of video cameras, tripods, and other equipment necessary to  shoot video. Check their website for policies:   http://www.american.edu/provost/ctrl/nmc.cfm

The Digital Media  Studio, located on the lower level of the University Library, has an  inventory of Flip and Kodak Zi-8 cameras and audio recorders for loan.  Check their website for policies:   http://www.american.edu/library/mediaservices/dms.cfm

  • For students enrolled in School of Communication media production courses:

The equipment room is located in the basement of the Media Production Center in MPC 12. It allows students in the School of Communication's media production courses to borrow a variety of professional quality film, video, sound and lighting equipment. In order to borrow equipment, you must go to the media production center in person, and you must present your student ID in order to check out and return equipment.

The equipment room is extremely accommodating when it comes to returns. Because you are allowed to rent equipment for multiple days at a time, you are given a specific date and time for it to be returned. If you can't return your gear by the deadline that was given to you, you can easily get an extension as long as you call before your deadline. Otherwise, late fees will be assigned based on the time between your deadline and when you contacted the Media Production Center.

The Media Production Center requires that all students who borrow equipment be enrolled in production courses. Although this could be seen as a necessary policy, it is very disappointing for students who wish to use the equipment for any extracurricular purposes.
