Turn clothes into cash

Who can’t use a few extra bucks in her (designer jeans) pocket? Head to Mustard Seed in Bethesda to turn your used clothes into cash.

The quaint boutique—just two Metro stops from AU—buys gently used jewelry, bags, shoes, and clothing from Anthropologie to Zara to everything in between. You get half the retail price in cash. So, if that sassy LBD sells for $20, you get $10, which you can put toward that sparkly number you’ve been eyeing. (Or textbooks, of course.) Mustard Seed sells by appointment only; log on to www.mustardseedshop to select your 15-minute slot.

The ever-changing second-hand inventory includes work wear from Banana Republic and J.Crew; designer denim from Citizens and Seven; and party dresses from Target to Prada. A true recessionista will even sniff out the occasional Chanel. Coco aside, you can easily walk out of the store with a complete, new-to-you outfit for less than $40.

Mustard Seed also offers a selection of vintage frocks—spanning the ‘60s to the ‘80s—and new clothing and accessories from affordable, indie designers. Be sure to check out the adorable, D.C. screened T’s, which are sure to stop traffic when you’re wandering around Washington, and the funky, colorful jewelry, none of which is priced over $20.

And how’s this for an AU twist: Word has it, Mustard Seed got its start on campus. The owners sold clothes to coeds under the tunnel before opening their Bethesda boutique.

Located at 7349  Wisconsin Ave. in Bethesda, Mustard Seed is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (301) 907-4699.
