American University operates the public radio station, WAMU, broadcasting at 88.5 FM. The commercial-free station is affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Radio International. The station began broadcasting as the student radio station, but developed into a professionally staffed station when the administration spun off the student radio station. Original programming includes "The Diane Rehm Show" and "The Kojo Nnamdi Show." WAMU is the leading public radio station for National Public Radio news and information in the greater Washington, D.C. area, and one of the top three in the country. WAMU's format, programming, and syndicated shows have attracted a loyal following of listeners in the metropolitan area and around the world. With a focus on public affairs, regional concerns, and national and international news, WAMU presents issues that reflect the heart of the university's mission to a broad listening public.
