In late July each year, the incoming class of graduate journalism students comes to campus for a three-credit course entitled Principles and Practices of Journalism. The class meets from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday for three weeks. In this time the journalism students learn best practices, connect with fellow students and faculty members, learn to take advantage of resources in DC, hone research, writing and editing skills. Every student comes away from the class with a nuanced set of skills--some students come in with little or no experience in the field and others may already have AP bylines and have worked in the field for years. Our experienced faculty provide specific feedback based on skill level and prepare the group of journalism students for an intensive year of reporting in Washington and the world.
