What’s the best way to connect to the Eaglenet network? There are two options available to connect to the Eaglenet network at AU: using wired or wireless. Generally speaking, the wired network is preferred as it is faster, more reliable, and more secure. However, you can also use the wireless network from virtually anywhere on campus. Regardless of how you connect, you will be required to sign on to Cisco Clean Access before you can use the Internet. Access to the Eaglenet wired network is available by plugging an Ethernet cable into any network port on campus. When you are connected to the wired network, you should disable your wireless connection, because using both connections at the same time can create problems. With an inexpensive Ethernet cable in your laptop bag, you will be ready to experience the best speed, security, and reliability available on the Eaglenet network. Customers using the Eaglenet wireless network should know that it may be less reliable than the wired network because it uses radio frequencies, instead of enclosed wires, for data transmission. The wireless network is less secure than the wired network because wireless communication signals travel through the air and can be intercepted more easily. Therefore, it’s a good idea to not send sensitive information via wireless without using encryption. OIT suggestions for encryption are secure socket layer (SSL) or sign on to the AU Virtual Private Network (through https://vpn.american.edu). For more detailed information about the Eaglenet wireless network, please review the Eaglenet wireless FAQ.
