Start an Internship Program

For more than 30 years, we have helped employers find motivated and experienced student interns. Our students are eager to learn from and contribute to your organization in meaningful ways.

The Career Center’s Internship Advisors will work with you to create a customized internship program for your organization. From our own experience with thousands of students and employers, we have developed guidelines to assist both you and your intern. Call the Career Center and speak to an Internship Advisor for more information about:

  • Training and mentoring interns
  • Developing clear expectations for interns
  • Designing and conducting performance reviews with interns
  • Legal issues involving student employment

Eighty percent of AU undergraduates complete at least one internship before graduating.

AU students may earn academic credit for substantive paid and unpaid internships. Positions must generally be a minimum of 15 hours per week for 12 weeks, and less than 15% of the student’s time may be occupied with clerical duties. A faculty member oversees the academic component of the internship. The workplace supervisor provides a positive learning environment for the student, and completes an evaluation of the student’s workplace performance. This evaluation is weighed from 25-50% of the student’s final grade.

Students may also accept internships that do not meet these guidelines. However, they will not receive academic credit for the experience.
