Internships

Internships are one of the main reasons students report selecting American University for their undergraduate and graduate studies, and American University is dedicated to integrating academic internships into the curriculum. Faculty are key to these experiences, either as supervisors of credit-bearing internships, as advisors to students interested in internships, and in networking with your professional colleagues who may offer internships.

This page offers links to resources for you, your students, and colleagues in the field, as a faculty member new to internships, or for those of you with many years of experience. Need help getting started? Click here for links to sample syllabi from your colleagues. Interested in structuring clear parameters for your department's internships? Check the parameters created by the Philosophy department and History department for graduate and undergraduate internships. Have a question about what makes an internship credit worthy? Listen to a podcast. Have an opportunity? Get it listed in AU CareerWeb.

For my specifics and exchanges with other AU Faculty, please go to the private AU Internship Faculty Blog. As AU faculty, you've been sent an invitation to join as readers and contributors. If you've lost that, send a quick email to Francine Blume and she'll get you another invitation. The blog is an opportunity for faculty to ask frank questions and share ideas. Check it out today!
