Interviews can be nerve-racking. Tame your fears by pondering these questions. Then practice.

Tough Question 1

Do you have the right background and skills for the position?

Employers ask this often. The question may be stated in an open-ended manner. Respond by highlighting specific skills and experiences that qualify you for the position, and identify strengths and characteristics that set you apart from the other candidates. Your response will depend on how well you know yourself, understand the position and organization, andcan articulate why you’re the winning candidate.

Tough Question 2

Are you willing to do the job?

To answer, know how the job fits into your overall career plans. Develop answers to these questions: What are your long and short term goals? Why are they important?

Understand how you might grow in the position and within the organization. Know what you hope to gain professionally and to what lengths you would go to achieve your goals. Would you relocate? Would you take a pay cut? What is more important, the money or the work?

Tough Question 3

Is the organization’s culture right for you, and vice versa?

Interviewers often interpret this question based on instinct: “I just feel this person is right for the job.” Employers consciously and subconsciously weigh your ability to respond to various personalities in the office, the organization’s culture (Greenpeace and AT&T have very different cultures), and your supervisor's management style. Although there are no right answers to questions concerning fit, researching the organizational culture before the interview will help you respond with clear, informed answers.
