Winter Break: January 10-12
The 10th annual NYC Site Visit Trip is open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in marketing, advertising, public relations, journalism, television, film, or a related field.
Designed for career exploration and networking, the trip offers students exposure to select career paths, industry trends, and organizational cultures as well as access to AU alumni living and working in NYC.
Site Visits
Students may visit up to three organizations per day on January 11th and 12th. A total of 21 or more sites will be confirmed and announced in late November.
Previous site visits have included The Associated Press, CBS News, Consulate Film, Discovery Communications, Estee Lauder, Food Network, FOX News, Google, Ketchum, Live Nation, MSL Group, MWW Group, Nickelodeon, Ogilvy, and Steve Madden among others.
Site visit hosts share their expertise and advice, and only announce job or internship opportunities when available. The key to securing a position as a result of the trip is to network and stay in touch with the alumni and employers whom you meet.
Evening Events
Participants will gather for an evening kickoff in NYC on Tuesday, January 10th and may choose to attend a student-alumni networking reception on Wednesday, January 11th.
Application Process
A total of 85 students can participate, and preference will be given to those who demonstrate the highest levels of career focus and professionalism through the application process.
To apply, log into AU CareerWeb or Kogod CareerSource and search for position 58876 (2012 NYC Site Visit Trip). Submit your resume and statement of purpose that in 300 words or less addresses why you want to attend the trip, what you hope to gain from the trip, and your expectations for how the trip will impact your career development. Then complete this short questionnaire through SurveyMonkey.
Applications will be accepted beginning Tuesday, November 1st at 12:00 a.m. and ending Sunday, November 6th at 11:59 p.m. Only complete applications (resume, statement of purpose, and online questionnaire) will be considered. Students must also be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Students will be notified of their application status by Friday, November 11th. Confirmed participants will be asked to pay a $100 registration fee that covers their participation in the NYC kickoff and student-alumni networking reception as well as inclusion in a resume book given to alumni and employers. Financial assistance will be available for students who find the registration fee cost-prohibitive.
Waiting List Policy
In the likely event of a waiting list, students will be notified as space becomes available.
Cancellation Policy
Confirmed participants who need to cancel must notify the AU Career Center in writing. If you e-mail Bridget O'Connell to cancel by Monday, November 28th, you will receive a partial refund of $50. If you cancel after November 28th, you will not receive a refund.
Site Visit Selection Process
Confirmed participants will receive descriptions of each site visit on Thursday, December 1st. Then students will complete an online questionnaire, ranking each site visit in their order of preference.
AU Career Center and Kogod Center for Career Development staff will match students with the site visits that align most closely with their career interests. Staff will take into consideration students’ statements of purpose, completed questionnaires, resumes, class standing, and academic performance. Staff will notify students of their appointed site visits by Friday, December 9th.
Other Key Dates
- Wednesday, December 14th: mandatory orientation for all confirmed participants from noon-1:00 p.m. (location TBD). Lunch will be provided.
- Friday, December 16th: deadline to submit approved resume for inclusion in resume book intended for alumni and employers.
