Creating
an Action Plan
|
Think
of your Action Plan as your strategy for achieving your career
objective. If you are in the process of designing your individual
career plan, there are a few steps you should take. As always,
visit your career advisor for individually tailored advice
and assistance with developing your Career Plan. |
|
| 1. | Define your overall career objective.
This is not necessarily a specific job or job title, although it may be. It could be a type of position in a particular career field. If you need help deciding on a major or a particular career field, please set up an appointment with your career advisor. |
| 2. | Set short-term and long-term goals. Your goals should advance you toward your career objective. Your goals will depend on where you are in your career development process and your overall career objective. For example, if you are a sophomore, an example of a short-term goal may be to conduct an informational interview with an AU alum this week. A long-term goal may be to do an internship next summer. |
| 3. | Identify what resources you will need to achieve your
goals. Using the above example of conducting an informational interview with an AU alum this week, resources you need may include things such as your résumé, alumni contacts, or a directory of organizations in a particular field. |
| 4. | Create your action plan. Using the goal of conducting an informational interview this week, an action may be to call five alumni or to set up an appointment with your professor to ask for contacts. |
| 5. | Decide on a time frame for implementing your plan.
Be sure to include realistic deadlines for your short-term and long-term goals and stick to them. |
