Below you will find the trajectory of storms that have threatened Puerto Rico during the 109 year period between 1887 and 1996.

Like other Caribbean countries, the economy of the island is exposed to large losses in property and possible victims during each hurricane season.  The extent of human and    property is mitigated each year by the continued advancements in technology that allow for accurate forecasting of the arrival and effects of a weather system.  Nonetheless, it is one more factor that must be considered when assessing the economy of the country.
Being a part of the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico is mainly exposed to hurricanes, flooding, and earth tremors.  The effects of any of theses disasters is compounded by the size of the island.  The main economic areas which tend to suffer from any of these natural disasters are :

  • Slides in Exports
  • Decreases in Tourism
  • Losses in Agriculture
Although advances have been made in technology, there is no way to circumvent the losses that these disasters create.  Organizations involved with responding to  these disasters and implementing emergency plans include the national committees of each country as well as regional organizations such as CDERA (Caribbean Disaster Response Agency). 56
