Manufacturing:
Namibia does not manufacture or assemble any part of a computer or computer peripherals. There is no company in Namibia at the present time that, manufacture or assemble any part of a computer or computer peripherals or any telecommunications equipment. Most of the computer hardware and peripherals in use in Namibia are imported from other countries. Countries such as China, Taiwan and other countries in Asia, Europe and America. The manufacturing base in Namibia consist mainly of harvesting and packaging of agriculture products. Namibia's economy evolves around mining and fish processing. Manufacturing plays a minor role in the economy of the country. This is due mainly to a small domestic market, influx of imported goods and unavailability of local capital to promote manufacturing. However, as the government continues to embark on various initiatives, intended to attract foreign investors to help diversify the economy of the country, it will not be long, before manufacturing of telecommunication equipments including, computer and computer peripherals starts in Namibia. One important factor that may hinder hardware manufacturing in Namibia is South Africa. South Africa, a dominant neighbor of Namibia, is more mature and more developed economically. As such, Namibia depends very much on imports from South Africa, therefore, it is easier to import hardware than to manufacture it. Small skilled labor force, high labor costs and subsidized competition from South Africa add to the difficulties of hardware manufacturing in Namibia. (6) Namibia is not recognize as a major
player as a hardware manufacturing country. The country is little
known outside Africa. South Africa's popularity throughout the world
has over shadow Namibia.
