The Information Technology landscape in
(NAMIBIA)

About Namibia     Software Development:

Most of the software in used in Namibia are imported from Europe and the U.S.A.  These software are obtain through technology licensing agreement with foreign owners.  The country has not develop software development industry of its own.

There are many reasons for lack of software development of any kind in Namibia, compared to a country like South Africa.  Some of the reasons are:

  • Namibia is a young country, less than a decade old.  As such, the country is still in its developing stages.
  • Namibia has less skilled labor in general, especially those with technology and telecommunications skills.  Approximately 55% of the population over 20 years of age have no secondary school education.  (1)
Software development is not a prominent feature in Namibia's economic development programs.  The country dose not have the resources it will take to be a major player in software development.  Resources such as funding for local research and development (R&D) efforts are most non-existing.
