The Information Technology Landscape In
The Republic of Guinea
Analysis: Impact on Business:
It  is still possible for a business to set up successful operations given the current IT conditions.  Guinea has made impressive improvements by decreasing its phone line teledensity and connecting itself to the Internet. Guinea has great natural resources, it' s politically stable, and the government has liberalized and privatized the sector. Unlike several years ago, it will not be difficult for a business to install phone lines or even connect to the Internet. There are already several manufacturing companies in Guinea taking advantage of natural resources such as bauxite, diamond and gold.  I believe that these companies do have the required infrastructure to run successful operations. One of the difficulties that a business will encounter in Guinea is the poor quality of infrastructure and the lack of skilled labor. However, both these problems are solvable as proved by Telecom Malaysia which took it into its own hands to train its local staff and to invest in major hardware improvements. Because of the lack of IT software and manufacturing in the country, it will also be expensive for companies interested in IT to out source all their needs. However, this can be offset by the extremely cheap and willing labor.
