Telecommunications in Guinea is primarly financed by the goverment and international organizations such as the World Bank and the US Aid. Unfortunately, both local and foreign companies are not investing much in the sector.IT Financing
Sotelgui currently beneficate from aid from the goverment since it is 40% owned by it. However, most of the capital is being provided by Telecom Malaysia which owns 60% of the company. The company had to invest $20 million to upgrade its facilities. Telecom Malaysia also spent $19.79 million in a switching contract for the provision of 100,000 lines, and $4.92 million in a local network project for the provision of 23,000 lines. ("Telekom's Guinea Investments Pay Off"; 1999).
As explained by the director of the company, Sotelgui has been having problems with the lack of support from local contractors and vendors.
