This is the system that “gets parts built” [iv] The MES manages all the resources needed to create a finished product when the customer needs it. These systems need to control the processes dynamically, using real-time data, to respond to changing conditions. An MES provides a real-time view of plant operations. The systems can compensate for machine downtime by rerouting work pieces. Inventory availability can be included in the calculations. MES can provide lead time reductions in excess of 20%, manufacturing cycle time reduction of 35% and work–in-progress (wip) levels reduction of more than 30% , according to the Manufacturing Execution Systems Association.
