About The Netherlands

The software market in the Netherlands grew to about 2.3 billion US dollars in 1999 representing a 15% increase from 1998.  In 1999, 30% of Dutch software sales were for tools, 40% application software and 30% system software.  The Dutch government is in favor of encouraging entrepreneurs and currently offers many types of support to companies developing technology products.  Generally government assistance is through tax benefits.  In 1999, 60% of software products in the Netherlands were imported with the US being the largest supplier followed by Germany, the UK and France.  Oracle for example currently has its European headquarters in the Amsterdam.[1]

One large formerly Dutch software firm is Baan.  Baan is known for its ERP, Supply Chain Management Systems, CRM, e-business solutions, and financial software.  Baan currently powers 15,000 sites. [2] Another company worth mentioning is KPN.  KPN is a web hosting company in the Netherlands.  Information about KPN is available in Dutch at:

In the Netherlands Windows NT is becoming the standard.  Linux is used on a small scale.   It was estimated in 1999 that Linux’ market share was less than 5%.  In terms of servers, UNIX is the most commonly used operating system.
