About the Author

The SVG government began an initiative to address the Y2K problem with the establishment by Parliament of the Year 2000 Project Committee on October 16, 1998.(1) The Government inventoried 18 critical services rendered to the people that are dependent on technology and therefore at risk for complications due to the Y2K issue.  Seven of the systems were deemed to be extremely critical (Finance, Public Utilities, Health, Customs/Shipping, Transportation, Government Payroll, and Tax Collection) because of their social and economic impact and therefore deemed to be possibly life-threatening if any disruptions occurred.

The following table indicate the sectors that are dependant on computers or digital systems and the approxiamate time schedules for remediation and testing of these systems:

Sector
Level of Dependance on Computerization
Remediation by:
Month in which Y2K conversion was  >90% complete
Customs Moderate August September
Energy/Power Moderate July September
Finance High June August
Government Services Moderate September October
Health Moderate October October
Telecommunications High July August
Transportation (Air) Moderate August October
Transportation (Maritime) Moderate August September
