Fall for the Arts 2012

The Arts at American University

Washington, DC, is one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the world, and the arts at American University have something for everyone—whether it's the creative talents of students and faculty or ground-breaking exhibits and performances by local and international artists.

Our academic programs comprise music, musical theatre, theatre, dance, studio art, art history, arts management, graphic design, audio technology, and creative writing. Thanks to two world-class facilities—the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center and the Harold and Sylvia Greenberg Theatre—AU is able to serve the greater Washington community through fresh, relevant, and provocative programming that takes full advantage of our location in the nation's capital and our resources as an extraordinary university.

Why Support the Arts?

American University is committed to educating tomorrow's leaders in a rigorous, liberal arts setting that provides ample opportunity for thoughtful discourse, creative expression, and experimental ideas, while cultivating intellectual and cultural diversity. Our students share a desire to make the world a better place, and continually challenge prevailing norms, confront difficult issues, and discover inventive solutions as they explore the arts in all its forms. In short, students add an element of intellectual and creative playfulness that enhances every aspect of cultural programming at American University. As the arts enrich the lives of our students, so do our students enrich the breadth and depth of the arts at AU.

University-based arts programs fill an important niche in our community. They are the training ground for the next generation of artists and cultural leaders, they inspire interdisciplinary and innovative thinking through instructional and thought-provoking exhibits, and they play a significant role in nurturing the arts within the greater community. The AU Museum is able to host smaller, more focused exhibits that explore contemporary issues and their cultural context, in settings far more instructional, and experimental than one would find in public institutions. The museum also fills a significant void in the D.C. art scene, by regularly promoting local artists.
