This endowed, graduate scholarship was established through the generosity of Harvey and Sarah Moore. Dr. Harvey Moore served as professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at American University.It is awarded annually to a graduate student studying anthropology.The scholarship’s recipient is selected by the graduate committee of the Department of Anthropology.

Betty T. Veatch Scholarship

The Betty T. Veatch Scholarship was established by the estate of Betty T. Veatch (MA/CAS/1974) to support graduate study in the field of archaeology. Preference is given to graduate students interested in studying the Potomac Creek Estuary of Stafford County, VA and further that the University provide support whenever possible to female students who are returning to graduate study later in life.

Catharina Baart Biddle Art Award

Catharine Baart Biddle Art Award was established by Catharina Baart Biddle (MFA/CAS/1981), a well-known Washington painter and philanthropist to the art community. Catharina Baart Biddle (deceased 2005) was married to Livingston L. Biddle Jr., author of the legislation that created the National Endowment for the Arts in the 1960s. Awarded annually, this scholarship is intended to provide financial support for undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the studio art program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Eligible students will demonstrate artistic talent (determined by the Art Department Chair) and be recommended by the faculty of the studio art program. The Award is to be used for the purchase of art supplies or other purposes supporting the student's artistic ability while the student is enrolled at the university.

JoAnn Crisp-Ellert Graduate Purchase Prize

JoAnn Crisp-Ellert Graduate Purchase Prize was established by the late JoAnn Crisp-Ellert (MA/CAS/1962 ; PhD/CAS/1970), a well-known Washington artist and former owner of Gallery 10. This prize is awarded annually each spring to a graduate painting, printmaking, or sculpture student based on the body of work in his or her master's thesis exhibition. The recipient will be selected by a jury appointed by the chair of the Department of Art.The jury will consist of one faculty member from the University's Department of Art and two artists who have no direct affiliation with American University.In turn, the prize recipient will donate one work of art from his or her master's thesis exhibition to American University.

Allan Carney Memorial Scholarship

Allan Carney Memorial Scholarship was established by Magenta Carney Yglesias (BA/CAS/1997) in memory of her father, Allan Carney. Allan Carney was an artist who decorated and restored the interiors of churches throughout the mid-western states. This scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in fine arts who exhibits financial need and academic excellence.

Dean and Rosina Carter Endowed Sculptor Prize
Undergraduate
Dean and Rosina Carter Endowed Sculptor Prize was established through the generosity of Dean (BA/CAS/1947) and Rosina Carter. This prize is awarded annually to an aspiring sculptor who is enrolled in the university's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Fine Arts and entering his or her senior (undergraduate) year. If, under this criteria, there is not a student eligible for selection, no award shall be made for that year and the income generated by the fund for that year shall be used for future awards.

Marian Rich Conley Art Award was established by Kenneth A. Conley, in memory of his mother Marian Rich Conley. This prize is awarded annually each spring to a deserving undergraduate or graduate student of painting or sculpture.The recipient is to be selected by the studio art faculty. The recommended amount of the award is $1,000; however, the studio art faculty is permitted to exercise discretion in relation to the amount of the award.

Ted and Elizabeth Leon Art Scholarship

Established by the Estates of Theodore H. and Elizabeth G. Leon, Elizabeth Leon created the endowed in memory of her husband and in grateful recognition of the personal rewards received from her long study of drawing and painting.The late Theodore Leon served as Chief of Language Services at the State Department from 1957 until 1977. He spoke German, Spanish, French, and Dutch and received the Superior Honor Award from the Department of State. Ted Leon was a native of West Virginia who earned a BA and PHD from Washington University in St. Louis. He pursued post-graduate studies at the Universities of Berlin, Poitiers, and Puerto Rico. Elizabeth Leon attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts on scholarship to study drawing and painting. During the 1970's, she was a student in the Department of Art at American University. The Ted and Elizabeth Leon Art Scholarship is awarded annually to a talented female junior, senior, or graduate student studying studio art who has financial need and is also a life time resident of Arlington County, Virginia

Stephen C. Grebe Endowed Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship - Graduate
Established in memory of Stephen C. Grebe, former faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University, by family, friends, and faculty. This scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate students pursuing summer research opportunities. The awards are to be competitive and will allow undergraduate students to work with the faculty in the Department of Biology on research projects of their own over the summer. The opportunity for a student to compliment his or her class work with a real-life research project will enhance and strengthen the student's academic experience and support the department's commitment to training young scientists.

Biology Dept - Ella F. Helmlinge Biology Fellowship

Through a generous gift to American University by Ms. Ella F. Helmlinge, the Ella F. Helmlinge Biology Fellowship was established for the development of the Department of Biology. Specifically, it is my wish that the principal be held for use for the construction of new and adequate housing for the Department of Biology and that in the interim, income earned on the gift made herewith be used in the current operation of the Department of Biology through a scholarship, an assistantship or such other operating needs as may be deemed necessary by the Chairman of the Department of Biology and the Administration of the University. Since April 1965, the Ella F. Helmlinge Biology Fellowship has provided a stipend and 24 hours of tuition remission to a graduate student in biology. The Fellowship is awarded twice a year, once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester.

This fund was established in 1996, by Dr. Nina M. Roscher and American University, with monies awarded to Dr. Roscher, as recipient of the American Chemical Society's Award for Encouraging Women in the Chemical Sciences. Income from the fund will be awarded at the discretion of the Chair of the Chemistry Department. Preference will be given to female students interested in the chemical sciences profession.

Leo Schubert Endowment Fund established through generous contributions of former students and friends of Leo Schubert to be used to support chemical education. The Prize will be awarded each spring to the best graduate teaching assistant in chemistry. The annual award is $100.

Anthony M. Schwartz Fellowship
Fellowship
Established in memory of Anthony M. Schwartz, a former professor of research in the Department of Chemistry at American University by his wife Jane, family, and friends. Anthony M. Schwartz was born in Philadelphia on July 31, 1908. He received his BS in chemistry (1928) and his PhD in organic chemistry (1931) from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Anthony Schwartz served as a chemist with Alrose, Visking, and National Aniline Chemical Companies. In 1944 accepted a position at Harris Research Laboratories in Washington, DC. When Harris Research Laboratories became the Gillette Research Institute, Anthony Schwartz served as assistant director and then as principal scientist and manager of the Harris Research Laboratories Department. Upon his retirement in 1973, he established his own consulting firm and held an adjunct position as a research scientist at Lehigh University's Center for Surface and Coatings Research and as research professor at American University.
Awarded during the summer semester, the Anthony M. Schwartz Fellowship supports undergraduate students conducting chemistry research. The award includes research stipend, scientific supplies, and personal travel for the holder(s) of the fellowship.
Preference will be given to an American University junior chemistry major, although applications from sophomores are also welcome. Selection will be based on grades, recommendations, and a statement of the student's interest in chemistry research. To apply, a completed application is to be returned to the Department of Chemistry office no later than March.

Established by Horace S. Isbell, the Fellowship is awarded annually to two graduate chemistry fellows. Selection is made by the chair of the Department of Chemistry.

Jessica Waters and Douglas Ward Scholarship
Scholarship - Undergraduate
Restricted scholarship funded annually for five (5) years through to 2009 by Jessica Waters (BA/CAS/1998; JD/WCL/2003) and Douglas Ward. Awarded, annually beginning fall 2005 or spring 2006 for five (5) years through to fall or spring of 2009, in the amount of $2,500, to a sophomore. The award will be an additive award to any student already receiving financial aid. It will be renewable and will follow the student until graduation as long as the student maintains a 3.3 grade point average and completes 20 hours of community service each year. The scholarship award will be made at the discretion of the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to students based on need with preference to students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Barnee and Dolores Breeskin Scholarship

The Barnee and Dolores Breeskin Scholarship was established in memory of Barnee Breeskin by friends and family.Barnee Breeskin graduated from Central High School and attended Georgetown University. His first career was in music. From 1930 to 1956, he led the orchestra at the Blue Room at the Shoreham Hotel and in 1938 wrote and obtained the copyright for the music for "Hail to the Redskins." He then founded Barnee Breeskin Inc., a public relations firm. Mr. Breeskin was a member of the Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts and the father-in-law to Gail Humphries a member the Department of Performing Arts faculty, at AU. It was Dolores Breeskin's wish that following her death (2002), that her name be added to the scholarship title.

The Sylvia and Harold Greenberg Scholarship was established by Harold and Sylvia Kay Greenberg. Sylvia Kay Greenberg served as a member of the American University Board of Trustees from 1973-1996.This scholarship is awarded annually each spring for the up-coming fall semester to an undergraduate student in the performing arts program. The scholarship provides tuition assistance and living costs while enrolled full time at the university.

Mary Miller Patton Scholarship

Mary Miller Patton Scholarship was established by General Major John and Professor Mary Miller Patton (faculty emerita) in honor of Professor Patton. From 1943 until 1973, Mary Miller Patton taught speech, English, and classical drama and served as director of the American University's drama program.
This scholarship is awarded annually (as funds permit) to an undergraduate sophomore and/or junior specializing in dramatic arts in the Department of Performing Arts.

Robert T. Adams Scholarship was established through a gift from the late Robert Thomas Adams (BA/CAS/1948, MA/CAS/1959) and his wife, the late Marguerite Hayes Adams.
The purpose of this fund is to provide aid to an outstanding undergraduate student, majoring in economics who has exhibited financial need. Due consideration should be given to any African American student meeting the established criteria.

Award Prize - Graduate
The Professor Jose D. and Ursula Epstein Awardwasestablished in memory of Jose Epstein, a former professor in the Department of Economics, by his wife, Ursula Epstein and his family.
This award is given annually to a student completing a MA degree in the development banking program who exhibits an outstanding performance as measured by the cumulative grade point average at the end of his or her last semester. If no student is eligible, a student in the Department of Economics may be selected.

The Simon Naidel Dissertation Fellowship was established by the Estate of Simon Naidel. Simon Naidel earned his doctorate from CAS in 1951. Usually given in the spring, this fellowship is awarded to a graduate student majoring in economics who has financial need. The fellowship is either given as a cash award and/or tuition assistance.

Nikos G. and Anastasia Photias Educational Foundation Scholarship
Scholarship - Graduate
This scholarship was first granted at American University in 2004 and is jointly awarded annually to postgraduate students at American University and the University of Economics and Business in Athens, Greece. It is granted by the Nikos G. and Anastasia Photias Educational Foundation, which was established by Anastasia Photias in memory of her husband, Nikos G. Photias. Nikos Photias was a professor economics.
The Scholarship is provided to support partial scholarship to a deserving scholar or otherwise support postgraduate study in the field of economics. The support must be publicly recognized as being from the foundation and recognize the lifelong commitment of Professor Photias for the pursuit of excellence in the field of economics and his dedication to inspire and instill this same commitment in his students.

Established in memory of Frank M. Tamagna, a former professor in the Department of Economics, by his wife, Irene Tamagna, M.D. and friends, the Frank M. Tamagna Educational Fund supports both an award and a lecture series.
This prize is awarded annually in the spring to an outstanding graduate or post-doctoral student who has excelled in the field of international finance. The lecture series is usually held in the spring semester.

Ganek Family Student Teacher Awards

The Ganek Family Student Teacher Awards was established by Dr. Lynne Brenner Ganek , a former CAS instructor, to support student teachers.
The awards were established to provide financial support to student teachers in the development of inventive classroom activities, lessons, projects, and experiments. Each $500 award will be given to a student teacher who promotes academic excellence and who designs exciting learning experiences which meet curriculum standards. Student teachers may apply for the awards during the practicum semester. Awards will be made at the start of the student teaching semester and can be executed throughout the term. A team of readers will review the award applications. The applications will be scored by the following criteria: creativity, benefit to students/school/community, motivational impact, and effective use of funds.

The William M. Vincent Scholarship was established by the Clare Rose Foundation, Inc., on behalf of William Vincent (BA/CAS/1995) by Valerie Vincent, President of the Foundation.
Income from the fund will be awarded annually in accord with the University’s financial aid policies. Preference given to students enrolled in the School of Education with a concentration in Special Education in the College of Arts and Sciences. Eligible applicants will maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and complete a minimum of 30 credits per year.

The Stephen and Lynn Greenfield Family Scholarship was established by Stephen and Lynn Greenfield (BGS/CAS/1979) and their family to provide financial support to a deserving student enrolled in CAS.
Awarded annually to an undergraduate student enrolled in CAS in his or her sophomore year. Eligible applicants will have attained a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and completed a minimum of 30 credits.
Preference should be given, when possible, to a student studying in the following areas: Education, Jewish Studies, or the Arts. If, in a particular year, there are no qualified applicants, the University may choose to award the scholarship in a manner that best follows the donor's original intent or reserve the funds for a subsequent year.

Josephine G. Gimble Scholarship

Established in memory of Josephine G. (Gichner) Gimble (BA/CAS/1952) by her children, Dr. Jeffrey Gimble, Elliot Gimble, Dr. Frederick Gimble, and Dr. Diane Johns.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student in their junior or senior year who is majoring in the health sciences and who has expressed a commitment to a career in the allied health fields (including, but not limited to, nursing, occupational or physical therapy, public health, and nutrition). Preference is to be given to a female student who is originally from Washington, Maryland, or Virginia.
The recipient will have a 3.0 grade point average or higher and demonstrate financial need. In the absence of a qualified applicant, the University may decide not to award the scholarship in any given year. Scholarships awarded by the fund will be applied to the cost of attending the University.

Dorothy Gondos Beers Scholarship

The Dorothy Gondos Beers Scholarship was established by Dr. Dorothy Gondos Beers, professor emerita, former dean of women, and first chair of the Faculty Senate at American University.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate student in the Department of History who may use the funds to meet the costs associated with attending the University.

Award Prize – Undergraduate and Graduate
The Dr. Dorothy and Victor Gondos, Jr. Award was established by the Estate of Victor Gondos, Jr.
This prize is awarded in alternate years for a paper on some phase of the History of Administration of Archives or of American History, the contest is open to all graduate and undergraduate students of AU and any professional archivist at the National Archives. For the years the award is given, income may be used for granting additional awards and for adding to the list of eligible other classes of contestants in or out of the University at the discretion of the University authorities. For each intervening year when no prize award is granted, income may continue to be added to principal or may be disbursed for a distinguished faculty award, scholarships, research, or any combination of these purposes at the discretion of the University.

The Richard and Carol Breitman Endowment was established by Margaret Anthon in honor of Richard and Carol Breitman.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a doctoral student enrolled in the Department of History. Preference will be given to students who have a focus on the study of European History. The Graduate Committee and the Chair of the Department of History will select scholarship recipients. Scholarships are to be applied to the cost of attending the University.

This scholarship is awarded to a student in Judaic studies at the discretion of the chair of the Jewish studies program. This scholarshipis not given annually.

Everett and Marian Gordon Scholarship

The Everett and Marian Gordon Scholarship was established through the generosity of Everett and Marian Gordon.
This scholarship is awarded to the most promising student planning a major in Jewish studies. Preference is to be given to students without a background in Jewish studies. This is not an annually awarded scholarship.
Support may also be in the form of a cash award to senior students for an outstanding thesis and may also cover related costs for selection and publication of said thesis.

The Judaic Arts and Studies Scholarship was established by the Institute for Judaic Arts and Studies, Inc., a non-profit corporation based in Kensington, Maryland, and led by Bernard M. Levy, Bernard Gerwirz, Alvin J. Steinberg, Abe Pollin, Rabbi Joshua Haberman, and Jason Silverman.
For promoting research and providing books and media materials for the Jewish Studies Program. Not an annual scholarship. Awarded by the Jewish Studies program.

Sara Presciutti Memorial Scholarship

The Sara Presciutti Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Sara Presciutti (ND/CAS/1996) by family and friends.
Awarded annually, as funds permit, to aid students who have an active interest in Italian studies, this scholarship may be awarded to a student studying in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies or the Department of Literature. The Sara Presciutti Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student currently enrolled at American University. However, preference is to be given to a student who plans to travel and study in Italy, or a student from an Italian university who is studying at American University.

Spanish and Latin American Studies Scholarship
Scholarship - Undergraduate
The Spanish and Latin American Studies Scholarship is funded by Jack Child, Professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies, Acting Chair for the Department of Language and Foreign Studies and Affiliate Professor of International Relations, SIS.
Professor Jack Child was born of American parents in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and lived in South America for 18 years before coming to the United States to attend Yale University. Following graduation from Yale he entered the U.S. Army, and served for 20 years as an Army Latin American specialist until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel. In 1982 he joined the Department of Language and Foreign Studies, where he teaches a variety of courses (in both English and Spanish) dealing with translation and Latin American studies, with an emphasis on popular culture. His research has focused on cultural studies and conflict resolution in Latin America. He has received several grants for research dealing with negotiations in Antarctica and the Falklands/Malvinas, and peace-keeping and confidence-building measures in Central and South America. His interest in high latitudes has taken him on twelve trips as staff lecturer and guide aboard expedition cruise vessels to Antarctica and Sub-antarctic Islands, including South Georgia and the Malvinas / Falklands. He has published numerous books and articles on all these research areas.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate or undergraduate student majoring or concentrating in Spanish and Latin American Studies and will be applied to the cost of attending the University.

The College of Arts and Sciences Literature Fellowship was established by Robert F. Pence (JD/WCL/1971; MA/CAS/1997).

This scholarship is awarded annually, as funds permit, to a student majoring in European literature who exhibits financial need and achievement.

Frank Cox Jones Scholarship for Women in Mathematics

Established by Blair Jones (MS/SPA SOJ/78; MA/CAS/95) to support women in mathematics.
Awarded, annually as funds permit, to an undergraduate or graduate female student(s), enrolled in the Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences. Eligible applicants will have attained a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average and completed a minimum of 30 credits. In selecting a pool of eligible applicants, preference will be given to female students of US citizenship.
If, in a particular year, there are no qualified applicants, the University may choose to award the scholarship in a manner that best follows the Donor's original intent or reserve the funds for subsequent years when qualified applicants are identified. Scholarships awarded will be applied to the cost of attending the University.

Hanna Miriam Sandler and Bella Sandler Endowment
Scholarship - Graduate
The Hanna Miriam Sandler and Bella Sandler Endowment was established in memory of Hanna Miriam Sandler, a former professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics by parents Samuel and the late Bella Sander and husband Dr. Jeffrey Hakim. Dr. Hakim is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The purpose of the fund is to provide partial financial support each to a promising student who has a strong interest in mathematics.
Income from the fund will be awarded annually to a graduate student who is earning a degree in mathematics or mathematics education, with preference given to female graduate students. The endowment is intended to support either research in mathematics or research in mathematics education involving the teaching of college-level mathematics.
Preference is for female graduate students, but qualified male students are acceptable if there are no qualified female students. In the absence of any qualified students, the committee may decide not to award the scholarship in any given year.

Esther W. Ballou Memorial Scholarship

The Esther W. Ballou Memorial Scholarship was established by alumni and friends in memory of Esther Williamson Ballou, a former composer and faculty member in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Awarded, annually, to music students at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Music, this scholarship may also fund a stipend.

The Lilyan Evans Music Scholarship was established by Mrs. Lilyan Evans and her two sons Dr. Geoffrey Evans and Mr. Randall K. Evans. Mrs. Evans is a music enthusiast who has taken an interest in American University's Department of Performing Arts . Awarded, annually, to an undergraduate student enrolled in the Department of Performing Arts who is majoring in music, this scholarship provides for tuition assistance and associated costs of attendance at the university.

The Mary Howe and Hans Kindler Memorial Scholarshipwas established in memory of Mary Howe and Hans Kindler, co-founders of the National Symphony Orchestra, by Charles Crowder, professor of music at American University (1964) and the Kindler Foundation. Mary Howe also served as faculty in the Department of Performing Arts/Music at American University.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a freshman majoring in music.

Award Prize - Undergraduate
The Harold J. and Ruth Pearson Endowed Prize was established by Colonel Harold J. (BA/CAS/1966) and Ruth (BA/CAS/1966) Pearson.
Beginning in 2002, this fund is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in philosophy and provides for philosophy and religion lectureships, student assistance, travel, faculty research, and such other expenses as the Department of Philosophy and Religion may incur in carrying out its academic programs.

Edward B. Lewis Endowed Scholarship
Scholarship – Undergraduate and Graduate
Dr. Edward B. Lewis was the former pastor of the historic Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church in DC. He graduated from AU with a BA in 1946, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree in 1967, and he was honored with the Alumni Recognition award in 1981. The Edward B. Lewis Scholarship was established posthumously through a bequest from the Lewis Trust
Dr. Lewis requested that this bequest be used to establish a scholarship fund in his name, the income of which to be used for a worthy student or students preparing for the ministry or a church vocation.

Annual spring award to an outstanding student majoring in physics, for the purchase of books or other educational needs. If there is no qualified physics student, then it can be awarded to a qualified student of science.

The Jacob Kastner Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Jacob Kastner, former faculty in the Department of Physics at American University, at the request of Dr. Richard B. Kay, chairman of the Department of Physics and Bernard Singer of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Awarded annually to outstanding physics majors, this is a cash award presented to the recipients, selected by the chair of the Department of Physics, at an event usually held in the late spring.

This prize is awarded annually, as funds permit, to an undergraduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences who has demonstrated excellence in pre-medical studies.

Barnard Endowed Scholarship
Scholarship – Undergraduate and Graduate
The Barnard Endowed Scholarship was established by John Fiske Barnard (MBA/KSB/1959) in memory of his late wife, Lovelle, who benefited greatly from the teachings of AU psychology Professor James J. Gray.
The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarship support to deserving graduate, undergraduate, or non-degree students studying psychology. For so long as he is willing, Dr. James. J. Gray shall oversee the administrations of the scholarship, which shall be awarded to deserving, students in need of financial assistance, with preference for adult learners.
In accord with University policy, a pool of qualified scholarship candidates shall be selected with Dr. Gray and two other faculty members appointed by the Chair of the Department of Psychology. Once the pool of qualified candidates is selected, Dr. Gray will select the scholarship recipient from that pool. If Dr. Gray is unwilling or unable to participate in the administration of the scholarship, the Dept. Chair will select a member of the Department as a replacement. Dr. Gray or his designee shall be given the broadest discretionary powers that can be conferred in conformity with the regulations of the University.
