Premed Student Info

Congratulations on your admission to the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Certificate Program at American University. Please note the following:

  • Students in certificate programs must take at least six semester hours of course work during each twelve-month period and must complete the certificate within four years from the date of acceptance.

  • Students taking undergraduate level courses must maintain a 3.00 (B) grade point average; only those courses with grades of "B" or higher may be applied towards a certificate.

  • When you begin the final semester of your program, please contact the Premedical Programs Coordinator to initiate preparation of your completion certificate.

If you plan on enrolling, please complete our Enrollment Confirmation Form andcontact Dr. Lynne Arneson, the Premedical Programs Coordinator, at larneso@american.edu, to register for classes. You should also see her in Hurst Hall as soon as possible after you arrive on campus.

We have an extensive advising program for all premedical students who enroll at American University. You may wish to look at our website.

The summer, fall,and spring semesters begin on May 11, 2015, August 31, 2015, and January 11, 2016, respectively. You should email Dr. Lynne Arneson to authorize your course registration and help you with on-line registration.

TUITION and FINANCIAL AID: Tuition for Summer 2015 is $1,376/ credit hour for lower level courses or $1,482/credit hour for senior and graduate level courses: tuition for the academic year 2015-2016 is $1,417 per credit hour for lower level courses or $1,526/credit hour for senior and graduate level courses, plus certain fees detailed here.
Federal financial aid up to $10,500 per year in student loans is available once accepted into the certificate program. Interested students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and supporting documentation upon request. You may register online
here. The school code for American University is 001434. This is considered to be a fifth year undergraduate program, which normally requires four semesters for completion. If you have already completed a 2014-15 FAFSA, be sure to add American University's school code by calling (800) 433-3243. Students must complete the FAFSA each year to be eligible. The deadline is March 1.
