Requirements for the American Studies Major
Five Components to the Major:
(1) Three Required Courses:
- AMST-205/205G American Dreams/American Lives 2:2 (3)
- AMST-400 Interpreting American Culture (4)
- ANTH-251 Perspectives in Cultural Anthropology (3)
(2) Nine credit hours from the following:
- HIST-205/205G American Encounters: 1492-1865 (3)
- HIST-206 The US from Emancipation to WWII (3)
- LIT-210 Survey of American Literature I (3)
- LIT-211 Survey of American Literature II (3)
(3) One Concentration: Twelve credit hours of courses dealing with some aspect of American life selected from a single department or related departments
(4) Additional credit hours in AMST at the 300 level or above, excluding Internships and Independent Study
(5) Senior project through one of the following:
- AMST-410 Senior Thesis I (3)
- AMST-411 Senior Thesis II (3)
- AMST-491 Internship in American Studies (3-6)
Requirements for the American Studies Minor
The Minor in American Studies requires 22 credit hours and is open to students in government, history, literature, and many other disciplines. To minor, students take three of the basic required courses for the major and an additional 12 credit hours in American Studies upper-level courses.

- One Concentration of 12 further credit hours in American Studies at the 300 level or above
