American University Arab Studies Program

Requirements

Students may pursue a Certificate or Minor in Arab Studies. For the certificate, students need to fulfill the minor requirements in addition to 8 credit hours in Arab language study. To receive the minor or certificate, all courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Certificate in Arab Studies


The Arab Studies Certificate requires:

I. Twenty-one credit hours for the Minor in Arab Studies (see below)

II. Two courses in Arabic Language from the following with grades of C or better:

ARAB 102 Arabic Elementary I (4)

ARAB 103 Arabic Elementary II (4)

ARAB 202 Arabic Intermediate I (4)

ARAB 203 Arabic Intermediate II (4)


Minor in Arab Studies


The Arab Studies Minor requires 21 total credit hours (with C or better) as follows:

Required Courses (6 Credit Hours) — both of the following:

SOCY 225: Contemporary Arab World

SIS 245: The World of Islam

Electives (15 Credit Hours) — five of the following courses, including at least one from each group:

Group 1: History, Culture and Society

ANTH 339: Culture Area Studies:
Israel and Palestine

ECON 358: Economics of World Regions:
The Arab World

GOVT 532: Middle East Politics

HIST 248: Transformations of the Middle East

 

Group 2: International Relations

SIS 264: Contemporary Middle East

SIS 365: Arab-Israeli Relations

SIS 571: International Relations of the Middle East I

SIS 572: International Relations of the Middle East II


Students may also substitute a related course with the permission of the academic advisor. These courses can be chosen from a list published each semester that includes non-recurring courses not listed in the University catalog.
