Featured Biology Course for Fall 2008 BIO-596 Bioinformatics This course covers two distinct but interrelated scientific disciplines focused on gathering(genomics) and making sense of (bioinformatics) large amounts of biological information. In general, the methods and concepts of genomics are presented and discussed in a lecture, and bioinformatics techniques are presented and applied during a hands-on computer lab in the second half of each class. Genomics topics covered in lecture include genomic and cDNA library construction, genomic sequencing, and microaray analysis of gene expression. Bioinformatics applications presented in lab include sequence retrieval, BLAST, sequence alignment, gene prediction, comparative genomics, and phylognentic inference.
