David Culver, PhD I am interested in a variety of aspects of cave and other subsurface communities and ecosystems. I have done research on ecosystem services, species interactions, population regulation, evolution, adaptation, biogeography, in the subterranean realm. My current research projects involve three aspects of the conservation biology of the subterranean biota. The first is the mapping of subterranean biodiversity for the U.S. and Europe. This fauna is quite rich, with over 4000 described species, many of them with highly restricted ranges. The list of U.S. species, by county, is on the web (www.karstwaters.org). The second aspect is the study of the very rich, but virtually unknown fauna of the rock-soil interface in Karst - the epikarst. Finally, I am studying a rare amphipod found only in the shallow subsurface waters of the Coastal Plain of the Potomac River in the vicinity of Washington, DC. Contact Information: |
