What are the entrance requirements for graduate study?

 

Applicants to the Master of Science in Computer Science must have:

  • a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • a grade point average of at least 3.00 (on a scale of 4.00) for the last sixty hours of undergraduate work;
  • official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) aptitude test;
  • completed two semesters of introductory computer science courses or their equivalents

Enrollment Criteria for Graduate Certificate Study:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree.

The following students ordinarily may not register in non-degree status:

  • Students currently enrolled as undergraduate- or graduate-degree students in any of the member institution of the Consortium of the Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area;
  • American University students who have not completed their degree programs;
  • Students who have been dismissed from American University or another college or university within the previous twelve months;

What are the degree requirements for a Master of Science in Computer Science?

 

To earn a Master of Science in Computer Science students must:

  • Successfully complete 33 semester hours of approved graduate level work.
    Coursework must include:
    • CSC-520 Algorithms and Data Structures (3) or equivalent
    • CSC-521 Design and Organization of Programming Languages (3) or equivalent
    • CSC-540 Computer System Organization and Programming (3)
  • Demonstrate proficiency in a tool of research by passing CSC-600, Simulation, with a grade of B or better.
  • Pass a comprehensive examination by passing CSC-694, Capstone Project, with a grade of B or better.

 


How Do I Declare My Major or Minor?

 
  1. Complete an Academic Change Form which may be obtained from the CAP Department Office.
  2. Have the form signed in the CAP Department Office.
  3. Take the completed form to the College of Arts and Sciences Counseling Services Office.

How Do I Register for My Courses?

Can I register for classes at the CAP Department Office?

 

No. The registration procedure for CAP students is as follows:

  1. Contact your academic advisor in order to make an appointment for advising.
  2. Have your advisor authorize your registration.
  3. If you are signing up for an independent study, intership, co-op, or consortium course, have your form signed by the Department Chair.
  4. If you are a non-U.S. citizen with a J-1 or F-1 visa, obtain the signature of the international student advisor.
  5. Take any completed forms to the Office of the Registrar.

How do I drop a course after I have registered?

 
  1. Complete the Drop/Add Registration Form.
  2. If you are a non-U.S. citizen with a J-1 or F-1 visa, obtain the signature of the international student advisor.
  3. Take the completed form to the Office of the Registrar.

How do I add a course after I have registered?

 
  1. Make an appointment with your academic advisor.
  2. Have your advisor sign your Drop/Add Registration Form.
  3. For courses with a unique title add, have your form signed by the Department Chair.
  4. If you are a non-U.S. citizen with a J-1 or F-1 visa, obtain the signature of the international student advisor.
  5. Take the completed form to the Office of the Registrar.
