City Year — National Service Scholars Program: Master Degree Options for City Year Corps Members, Alumni and Staff

American University is partnering with City Year to offer Master degree options to City Year corps members, alumni and staff. City Year affiliated participants will be able to choose from three degrees in the School of Education (SOE). These programs include flexible course delivery, a cohort based design, discounted tuition and are designed for those corps members who want to continue to make a difference in the lives of children and transform public schools.

To Apply

The priority deadline to apply for fall enrollment is Feb 1 and the 2nd deadline is March 1. Applications are accepted and processed on a rolling admissions basis until cohorts are filled. The application process for City Year corps members, alumni and staff include the submission of:

  • Click here to complete the online application;

  • Official transcripts (sealed) from any institutions previously attended;

  • Official ETS-delivered GRE scores for MEd Candidates: please send electronically using GRE school code: 8439 (no department code);

  • Special Education and MAT Candidates must submit passing scores on the Praxis Core Academic Sills for Educators Exam (CORE) electronically to American University (code= 5007);
  • a Letter of Intent (which is included in the online application) written by the applicant related to his or her background and career interests. 

  • Please indicate your City Year experience in your letter of intent as part of the application.

SOE will waive the application fee and the letters of recommendation requirement. City Year participants should have completed their year of service before entering this program; however, currently serving corps members are encouraged to apply during their corps year and if accepted, are eligible for all benefits specified above upon successful completion of their corps year.

To Verify Your
City Year Affiliation

Applicants seeking to be considered for City Year's National Service Scholars Program are required to submit a letter verifying their City Year affiliation. Please send an email to the City Year Alumni & Career Services Manager at with "American University SOE: City Year verification letter request” in the subject line and include the site where you served and dates of service in the email. This letter will be sent to the American University SOE program office and added to your applicant file.

--American University will waive 6 credits for the MAT programs and 3 credits for the MA program for City Year alumni and staff given their work in urban schools.

--City Year affiliated participants are offered up to three credits for their work in the public schools

**The Bilingual Education program is currently under review and no new students will be admitted to this program in academic year 2016-2017.
