I am broadly interested in the microbial ecology and biogeochemistry of aquatic systems and the restoration of degraded aquatic systems. My current projects are focused on understanding the microbial dynamics of aquatic ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay. Using a combination of classical and molecular microbiological techniques, my lab is conducting research on dissolved organic matter (DOM) and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degraders, nitrogen processors, and bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Our systems of interest include the Monocacy, Patuxent, and Anacostia rivers as well as wetlands including Jug Bay and Cove Point Marsh. Through this research we hope to improve the understanding of bacterial communities in urban systems.
