Brian Mann
Instructor
Department of History
- Brian Mann is an historian of the modern Middle East and specializes in the political and social history of twentieth-century Iran. He teaches the History Department’s Imperialism & Revolution course, as well as courses on the Middle East and the British Empire. Last year he presented a paper, “The Khuzistani Arab Movement, 1941-1946: A Case of Nationalism?”, at the Rethinking Iranian Nationalism conference held in Austin, Texas. The paper will be included in a forthcoming edited volume scheduled for publication in 2012. His new project will examine Iran’s efforts to develop the oil rich Khuzistan province during the postwar era. He is particularly interested in exploring the role played by David E. Lilienthal, the former director of the Tennessee Valley Authority, in these efforts, as well Lilienthal’s personal relationship with Muhammad Reza Shah.
