Research Interests

He is currently completing a history of citizenship in the Russian Empire and plans to begin work on a study of the end of the Russian Empire during World War I.  He will also serve as one of the editors of a multi-volume history of the Russian Empire during the First World War.  He takes an active interest in contemporary policy discussions on U.S.-Russian relations, and is writing an article on the fate of Russian regional soft power.

Work In Progress

   
• Citizenship in Imperial and Revolutionary Russia. In the writing phase of a study of the citizenship boundary in Russian history, focusing on the period 1860-1924.
   
• “Russian Soft Power in the Former Soviet States: Trends in Russian Language and Media.” Project underway with co-investigator Nino Japaridze that will result in at least one article and several presentations. Based on a massive set of proprietary data from surveys conducted by the Intermedia corporation, 1993-present.
   
• Co-editor of volumes on the Russian Empire during World War I, to be published by the Woodrow Wilson Center Press. I attended an editorial board meeting and conference in Aberdeen, Scotland in July 2008 to prepare this volume. It is in the very early stages.
   
• The End of the Russian Empire: War, State Failure, and Revolution (Arnold Publishing (Oxford University Press), under contract. Have not yet started to work on this).
