Joshua Woodfork

A Massachusetts native, Dr. Woodfork joined American University's Department of Anthropology in 2010, after serving as assistant professor of American Studies at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY since 2005. He earned his PhD in American Studies from the University of Maryland, his MA from Michigan State University, and his BA from Colby College. He serves as the faculty liaison to AU's Frederick Douglass Scholars Program.
Dr. Woodfork’s scholarly interests include African American studies/history, American studies, diversity, ethnography and life history, intersectional analysis, lgbt studies, multiracial studies, popular culture, race and anti-racism, service-learning, social justice and whiteness studies. His teaching interests focus primarily on U.S. culture, history, and privilege, including concepts of intersectionality. He teaches classes on power/privilege, African American culture, life history/ethnography, adoption, autobiography, hip hop culture, blacks in film, and critical whiteness.
