Faculty:

Mustafa Aksakal was a panel participant: “Secularism in the Middle East and the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk,” from conference “Turkey: At the Crossroads of Secular West and Traditional East,” American University Washington College of Law. He was quoted in the Washington Post, Dec. 28, 2007, "Another in the Long Volley of Shots Heard 'Round the World," p.C1. He published a review of Kleine Geschichte der Türkei, by Klaus Kreiser and Christoph K. Neumann (Stuttgart: Reclam, 2003). Turkish Studies Association Journal 28 (2004; 2008): 160-1. Mustafa also presented "The Ottoman Origins of Secularism in the Middle East," Jan. 9, 2007, Washington College of Law.

Alan Kraut had a publication in January, 2008 of “From Arrival to Incorporation, Migrants to the U.S. in a Global Era” (New York University Press) co-edited with Hasia Diner and Elliot Barkan. He was also appointed an Affiliate Professor in the School of International Service. He was appointed to the Editorial Board of “Southern Jewish History,” the Journal of the Southern Jewish Historical Society. He delivered the John K. Lattimer Lecture at the New York Academy of Medicine, “‘Mirror of the Culture:’ Jewish Hospitals in the History of American Health Care” on December 12, 2007. He also delivered a lecture, “Foreign Bodies: Jewish Immigrants and the Ellis Island Medical Inspection” at the B’nai Israel Congregation in Rockville, MD.

Peter Kuznick did an interview with Farsnews in Tehran (www.farsnews.com) about the latest developments in Iran's nuclear program and the ongoing threat of war.

Eric Lohr conducted a workshop on “Methodology in History”—on conceptual and practical aspects of teaching courses on nationalism and empire in graduate history programs in East Europe. National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", Kiev, Ukraine, December 15-20, 2007.  Two presentations and discussant for the week-long seminar.

Anna Nelson was a commentator on a book discussion at the Woodrow Wilson Center, January 17, 2008.

April Shelford has been named co-editor of the Proceedings of the Western Society of French History.

Graduate Students:

Courtney Esposito has accepted a job as project coordinator at the Washington Historical Society.

Vincent Intondi will receive the Thomas M. Campbell Award for the best overall paper presented at the 2007 annual meeting of the Florida Conference of Historians.  His paper, "From Harlem to Hiroshima: The African American Response to the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki," examines the African American reactions to the atomic bombings, while shedding light on the connection between the anti-nuclear movement and black freedom struggle. His paper will be published in the organization's peer-reviewed journal, Selected Annual Proceedings of the Florida Conference of Historians in March, 2008.

The book Stephanie Jacobe co-authored, Never Want of Powder: The Confederate Powder Works in Augusta Georgia, is being awarded the Lilla M. Hawes Award by the Georgia Historical Society.

Amy Johnson will present a paper on the visual culture of Japanese internment at the 30th Annual Warren I. Susman Graduate History Conference at Rutgers University in April.

Allison Boals, Matt Ringelstetter, Amy Johnson and Coutney Esposito will present a poster session at the National Council Public History meeting in Louisville in April. The session is based on their practicum projects from spring 2007.

Undergraduate Students:

The James Mooney Award for Undergraduate Research enabled David Moak to conduct research for his senior thesis in Montpellier, France, over the winter break.  He has also published translations of "emulation" and "Royal Academy of Sciences" in the on-line Encyclopedia of Diderot and D'Alembert, which is edited by Dena Goodman and hosted by ARTFL, a cooperative enterprise of the CNRS, France, and the University of Chicago.  

Alumni/ae:

Sarah Brockett has accepted a job as grants writer for the New York Historic House Trust.
