Information Technologies Tool of Research

Within the past decade, new information technologies have begun to transform the way historians study the past and how they organize and communicate the fruits of their research to students, other historians, and the general public. These changes are accelerating and will continue to do so. Graduate students needs to prepare for the challenges and opportunities they will face in this new and rapidly changing environment. The requirements of the Information Technologies Tool of Research will help graduate students better utilize the databases and other changing resources of libraries, to better locate and critically evaluate historical materials on the web, and to better use new technologies in communicating historical knowledge.

In order to demonstrate competence in this tool, a student would need to successfully complete the following requirements:

1. Take History 6XX: History in the Digital Age (or its equivalent).

See a recent syllabus.

2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of web-authoring and multi-media design.

This requirement provides students with a sound technical foundation in web design and the use of multi-media. Students may satisfy this requirement in any of the following 3 ways:

1) Take Multi-Media Design 200: Multimedia I, or CSIS-200: Creativity and Computers. NOTE: Unlike History 6XX: History in the Digital Age, these courses would not count toward the 30 credits required for graduation with a Master's Degree in history.

2) Students may also fulfill this requirement by substituting (with the approval of GRACOM) a comparable course or courses (including non-credit workshops).

3) Students with extensive experience (but no comparable course work) may submit for approval to GRACOM a portfolio including professional experience and examples of their work.
