Faculty:

Richard Breitman will publish an expanded version of U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis with Cambridge University Press in January 2005.

Eileen Findlay gave a paper entitled, "Filming Migration: Visual Images of Operation Bootstrap Migrants and the Munocista Political Project," and commented on a panel entitled, "Haciendo Patria, Estudiando "lo nativo": Etnografia Desde Puerto Rico," Puerto Rican Studies Association.

Laura Kamoie taught an introductory oral history workshop at the OHMAR Annual Workshop Day at the Library of Congress. Laura commented on the panel, "Oral History: Race, Sexuality, Religion" at the DC Historical Studies Conference, for which she was program chair. Laura was nominated to the board of the OHMAR and was a featured speaker at CTE's Noontime Conversation for Faculty on "The Synergy of Academics and Community Engagement: Service-Learning Practices at American University." Laura received a book contract for Images of America: Adams Morgan (Arcadia Press).

Ira Klein published "Medicine and Culture in Britain and India," in Journal of Indian History.

Alan Kraut gave two lectures, entitled: "Goldberger's War," at the National Archives, and "American Jewish Immigration," at Temple Micah, Washington, DC. He was a feature speaker on the "Meet the Authors" panel at a joint meeting of the Southern Jewish Historical Society and the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.

Peter Kuznick gave the following interviews: Popular Science and New York Times (comparing scientists' heightened political activism in 2004 with scientists' activism at previous times in the twentieth century; New York Times (about approaches to warfare and violence in Oliver Stone's movies. He gave two talkes: "American Political History and the Fragility of American Democracy" for groups of journalists visiting from Albania and Iraq. He wrote a review of Samuel Walker, Three Mile Island: A Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective in History: Review of New Books.

Andrew Lewis had an article accepted for publication by the William and Mary Quarterly, "Swallow Submersion and American Natural History Practice."

Eric Lohr was a consultant for Intermedia and Radio Free Europe on their Russian language news programming.

Allan Lichtman was a panelist at the CAS Homecoming and Alumni Reunion and made many, many media appearances on CNN about the 2004 presidential election.

Pamela Nadell gave two lectures: "Then, Now, & Always...: Celebrating Women's Contributions to Jewish Life through the Years," for the Women's Affinity Network of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, and "From Haven to Home: 350 Years of Jewish Life in America," at Temple Beth Ami, Rockville, MD. She was quoted in articles in the Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report. She was a commentator on Joan Nathan's keynote address at the conference, "Are We What We Eat? American Jewish Foodways, 1654-2004," GWU. She was the subject of an American Weekly article, "350 years of heritage: Jewish Studies program helps mark milestone of American Judaism."

April Shelford presented a chapter of her manuscript, Apollo's Children, at the European Seminar at Johns Hopkins University. She served as a commentator for a session on early modern science at the Western Society for French History annual conference.

Graduate Students

Matt Clavin wrote a book review of Gregory T. Knouff, The Soldiers' Revolution: Pennsylvanians in Arms and the Forging of American Identity in the Maryland Historical Magazine.

Cliff Schecter published an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer and gave an interview with FoxNews and Polish Public Television on election predictions. He briefed eight French journalists (in French) on the state of the election through a program at the USIA (State Dept.).

Alumni/ae

Brett Abrams (PhD '99) published an article entitled, "Latitude in Mass-Produced Culture's Capital: New Women and Other Players in Hollywood, 1920-1941," Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies.

Aleisa Fishman (PhD '04) presented a paper entitled, "Keeping Up with the Goldbergs: Gender, Consumer Culture, and Jewish Identity in Subruban Nassau County, New York, 1946-1960," at the "Jews and American Business" Conference, Temple University.

Anne Foster (BA) was cited as one of a "short but distinguished list" of outstanding female students of Walter LaFeber (at Cornell), Diplomatic History.

Marshall Kiker (MA '00) was reappointed to be assistant editor of the William McLeod Journal Project and will also be serving as archivist at the Corcoran. She presented a slide lecture on the Journal Project at the Corcoran.
